When the Resistance is doing Laundry
I broke my rule about using my phone during my walk today. A kind person had skeeted at me over on Bluesky about how the NeoG books were getting them through the week. Then while I was on my walk I started thinking about Star Wars and about all the people in the background working tirelessly to fight the Empire.
If you follow me on Bluesky, you know what happened next. For those who don't, here's a slightly cleaned up version:
Everyone likes to think of themselves as Luke Skywalker. But not the nameless crew fixing the ship before the battle of Yavin.
Both are important. And there are far far more of the latter.
We are socialized in the US to favor grand gestures over the endless quiet determined work.
Go big or home, right?
No. Do the little work. It matters in the long run.
I've been thinking about this a lot because I know people are scared and I've seen people wanting "to know they're not alone" especially in dangerous areas. But blue bracelets and hashtag movements are going to do very little to help. Know what helps? Building community. Involving yourself in local elections. Showing up where you can. (all of this with a reminder that some people can't do these things, and it makes them no less part of the resistance) Our job is to do what we're able and help others.
And neighbors, you have to seek out community or create it if it's truly not there (but I promise it's there). Do the little work.
We all want to be heroes. You don't have to take down the Empire's bad guy in single combat to be one. Someone can take the job and if you're the only option then may the Force be with you, but the choice isn't that or nothing. Better to be the person evacing people from Hoth. Smuggling goods to feed the resistance. Hiding Jedi. Repairing ships.
Care in small ways. 💙
There's your extremely nerdy message of hope for today.
Look for a way to be relentlessly compassionate and do the little things.
Let's help each other survive this. 💙
Love,
K
